2007 Hunt 6

Tuesday, September 24, 2007. Got set up after work about 4:30 p.m. in a stand about 200 yards from my house. I had pushed a fawn around when I came into my driveway, but wasn't too worried as she has been a pretty regular on our lawn in mornings and evenings the past two weeks.

About 6:15 p.m. I spotted a fawn coming out of some think saplings. I don't think it was the same fawn I pushed out of my yard earlier, but it was hard to tell.

The fawn browsed on grasses, leaves and whatever acorns were left on the ground. I kept hearing other noises to my left, south of me. Slowly I turned my head towards the south and I spotted an adult doe staring towards my house. She stayed about 50 yards to my south and did not move. I could still hear the fawn browsing around my tree to the north. This lasted about a half hour. The doe would just not move. Finally the doe figured out there was something wrong, as she started staring me down, and pounding her front feet. The wind had been pretty steady from the west, but I noticed it was swirling a little. Sure enough she caught wind of me and took off, blowing a couple times to get her fawn. The fawn slowly and obviously unaware of any danger, moved toward the doe, and they both moved on towards the southwest.

A good night in the stand! Got the heart pumping pretty good. Had I been a right handed shooter I may have been able to get a shot at the doe, but it wasn't meant to be.

2007 Hunt 5

I didn't hunt Sunday as it was above 80 and the wind was swirling from all directions. Watched the Vikes lose in a horrible game instead.

Took off work early the afternoon of Monday, September 24th, and got into the ground blind on the neighbors piece. It was starting to rain pretty hard when I got in the blind, and quickly a small series of thunderclouds rolled in for about an hour. The rain and thunder cleared around 6:30 p.m.

About 7:00 p.m. I could barely see some movement on the far north end of the field. Saw at least one bigger buck and several adult does. They probably got as close as 75 yards by the time I got out of the blind.

Saw a cub bear on the way out!

2007 Hunts 3 & 4

Sat in a tree stand on Wednesday, September 19th with no deer activity.

Got permission to hunt neighbors land and set up in a ground blind on Saturday, September 22nd for an afternoon/evening hunt. No activity until just before sunset, when a spiked buck came out into the field. Walked in front of blind in bow range. He seemed to know something was up, and when he finally got a little more downwind he blew out of there.

2007 Hunt 2

Second day of the archery season. In a tree by 3:30 p.m. Set up about 100 yards from the house as the wind pretty much dictated as much. Had a south wind most of the hunt, but it was swirling and ended up coming out of the east by the end of the night.

Saw a really small fawn about 6 p.m. and let her go right by. Felt good!

2007 Hunt 1

Saturday, September 15, 2007

First sit of the 2007 season here in Minnesota. Got in my stand around 3:30 p.m. Saw absolutely no deer the entire sit. A little disappointed, but have another three plus months to get some brown down!

Remembered as I was sitting my feelings at the end of last years deer season. Burnt out, depressed, and ready for it to end regardless of my unsuccessful season overall. Last year resulted in two total deer, both fawns. One with bow and the other during rifle season.

It was a nice cold hunt for the middle of September.
