Finally got out again and it was well worth it. Kind of...
Weather looked good with a northwest wind and a temp. of 20; warmest in about two and a half weeks. Got out to the closest stand there is on my land, the ground blind below the tower overlooking the clover field, about 3:15 p.m.
About 4 p.m. or so a buck came into the clover field from the south. He initially looked nice, but soon realized he was a smaller 2 1/2 year old that looked to be a seven pointer. He came out in front of me and brought his head down below a snow bank I had made clearing out snow in the field. I drew, thinking that I'd never arrowed a buck yet and the season was drawing to an end fast. I had him at 25 yards for a split second before he turned east, straight towards me. I held for about a minute, then he headed south and then east down the logging road towards the pole barn. A doe soon followed, but never presented herself. They proceeded towards the corn plot and then the neighbors.
I hung the bow up again, and looked at my watch. It was 4:40 p.m. I really wasn't expecting much else after that. I had seen another doe that had been coming in with the other two deer in the past couple weeks from the house. I've not seen anything else.
Five minutes later, if that, I glanced south towards the tall grass and big oaks that stand between my land and the neighbors. The tall big buck that's been playing cat and mouse the with me the past month. He stopped, either seeing my movement or something else. He looked for another five to ten minutes before finally moving south to the clover field.
I had ignored the south of me, staring the bigger buck down. There were three does in the field! This was good, they did not see me at all. As soon as the buck got in a thicker section of birch and tall grass I drew and he stopped...cold and hard.
Three minutes at full draw, I knew he would come in at 25 to 30 yards. He did not move. The does did not stop browsing. I was shaking, and had to let up. The front right beam of the tower blind prevented any shot. He bolted, sending the does with him. He blew immediatly, and several times after.
He was a shooter!
